Union Ghost Soldier Appears Twice In One Night!

Monday, February 16, 2009, Midnight to 5:30 a.m.

This was related to me by my co-worker and fellow night auditor, Courtney:

Courtney was in the middle breakfast prep room gathering non-perishable items for the morning's breakfast service.  The door to the attic is located in this small room, which is between the manager's office and the laundry room.

Courtney heard a noise coming from the attic above her.  She opened the attic door, turned on the light, and looked up the staircase.  Directly  under the overhead light in the attic, Courtney saw a figure, clothed in dark blue, which appeared to be about three feet back from the top of the stairs.

Courtney described him as solid in appearance, then he began to shimmer until he faded totally away.  She said that the "Union soldier" was visible for approximately 10 seconds before disappearing.

When I asked Courtney to describe what the Union soldier looked like, she said:  "He had no head and no legs, just a torso and arms."

This account describes and corroborates exactly what I saw on January 12th at 3:35 a.m. in the lobby of the hotel.

6:15 a.m. - Courtney was in the laundry room standing in front of the deep freezer assembling items for breakfast.  The deep freezer sits under a window and we often use the top of the freezer to organize items.

At the time, the blind on the window was up and it was still dark outside.  Courtney felt as if someone was standing behind her and looked up to see her reflection in the window.  In the reflection of the window, Courtney saw herself and a figure standing just over her left shoulder dressed in blue.

Courtney immediately turned around and there was no one there.  When I asked her again to describe the figure, Courtney said it was the same figure she saw just 45 minutes before - no head, just a torso and arms.

Needless to say, I was very excited to hear that Courtney has seen the same Union soldier that I saw just a few weeks ago.  It appears to me that he is desperately trying to get our attention and trying to communicate in some way with us.  I also feel that the way he is appearing is, apparently, very important to him.  I speculated before that perhaps he is trying to tell us that he did die by artillery barrage.

Given the fact that one wing of our hotel sits where four out of six artillery pieces were situated, it would make sense.  For it was on the afternoon of July 1, 1863, that Lt. James Stewart's Battery "B" of the 4th U.S. Regular Artillery (Union) was heavily engaged and barely escaped capture.  The opposing artillery normally aims for other artillery pieces, so this area would have been taking heavy artillery hits.

In addition, remnants from the 11th PA Infantry Regiment, the 6th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment, the 147th NY Infantry Regiment, and several other NY infantry regiments also passed over the property on their retreat during the artillery barrage that Battery "B" was engaged in.  So, our soldier in blue could be from any one of these regiments as well.

I found this written account from survivors of Battery "B" which describes those who participated in the artillery action on our property, and it could just as well accurately describe any of the soldiers who fought at the Battle of Gettysburg:

"The term 'boys' is literally true, because of our gun detachment alone, consisting of a Sergeant, two Corporals, seven Cannoneers, and six Drivers, only four had hair on their faces, while the other 12 were beardless boys whose ages would not average 19 years, and who at any other period of our history, would have been at school!"

Ghosts Opening Doors

Sunday, February 8, 2009, 8:05 p.m.

This was related to me by my co-worker and fellow night auditor, Courtney:

Courtney had locked the back door in the laundry room at approximately 5:00 p.m.  Both Courtney and Carrie had been in and out of the laundry room at various times since the door had been locked at 5:00 p.m., but everything was secure.

At 8:05 p.m., Carrie went into the laundry room where the time clock is located to "clock out" of her shift, when she noticed that the back door was wide open.  The lock on the door was still in the locked position.

More Pipe Tobacco and Thumps in the Night

Monday, February 2, 2009

This was relayed to me by my co-worker and fellow night auditor, Courtney:

Midnight to 5:00 a.m. - Courtney reported numerous loud bangs and thumps to the front portion of the lobby/office building.  Each and every time she checked, there was no damage and nothing appeared to have caused the sounds she heard.  Small arms fire and/or artillery fire?

4:46 p.m. - I was alone behind the desk in the lobby on one of the computers when I heard a loud bang and a thump on the front portion of the lobby/office building.  When I went outside to investigate, there was nothing lying on the front porch or on the ground and no damage to the building.

Both Courtney and I experienced the same thing at two different times of the same day.

5:50 p.m. - I stepped out the side, private lobby door for a cigarette (I know, bad Carolyn).  As soon as I stepped out, I was immediately surrounded by that familiar sweet cherry pipe tobacco aroma.  I verbalized:  "Ah, join me for a smoke" and "I love that pipe tobacco."

I proceeded to walk up and down the side breezeway and the aroma followed me the entire time.  When I finished, I invited "him" to come on in.  I then entered the same private entrance into the lobby, closed the door and stood behind the counter.  I waited for approximately two minutes and then smelled that wonderful pipe tobacco aroma surround me again.

"No, no!  Pennsylvania law doesn't allow smoking in buildings anymore."  As soon as I spoke those words aloud, the aroma dissipated.

Note:  I was alone in the hotel AND there were no guests staying in the hotel this evening.

Sweet Cherry Pipe Tobacco and Campfires?

Sunday, February 1, 2009, 7:00 p.m.

This was relayed to me by my co-worker and fellow night auditor, Courtney:

Courtney stepped out the side, private lobby entrance and immediately walked into a wall of sweet cherry pipe tobacco smoke (a favorite of Confederate troops).  It only lasted 10 seconds and then it was gone.

Almost immediately thereafter, Courtney smelled what she described as campfire smoke.  (Courtney has been a camp counselor every summer for nine years and is quite familiar with the scent.)

Note:  Courtney was alone AND there were no guests staying at the hotel on this evening.  There are no campgrounds even remotely close to the hotel property as we sit out on the first day's battlefield.

These are aromas that have been experienced by the staff and guests alike many times.

Ghosts Playing With T.V.

Tuesday, January 27, 2009, 6:59 a.m.

We have a t.v. in the office that I normally have on in the mornings to catch up on the news while getting breakfast together.  I always turn it off just before 7:00 a.m. when I unlock the lobby door for breakfast.  This morning, I had turned off the t.v. and stood watching the snow falling outside the hotel.

I wanted another minute of peace before the breakfast service and check out.  After my small moment, I walked out into the lobby to unlock the door when I heard the t.v. inside the office come blasting on.

Yes, boys, I would love to sit here watching the news with my coffee, but I have another hour yet before I can go home and do just that.

Ghosts Moving Things Again

Saturday, January 17, 2009, 5:14 p.m.

I went into the breakfast room to re-stock the breakfast supplies for the next morning.  I always push all the chairs in tight against the tables as I have a habit of hitting them in the dark while walking through the room to get my middle-of-the-night coffee.

I had accomplished this task and had my back to the tables for about two minutes as I re-stocked supplies before returning to the lobby.  It was then that I saw one of the chairs had been pulled way out from one of the tables.

I questioned my co-worker, Barb, who was at the front desk in the lobby.  She had been reading the newspaper and didn't hear or see anything or anyone come into the lobby.  I pushed the chair back into position and went about my business.  No more chairs were moved this night.

6:19 p.m. - I had to step out the side, private lobby entrance to attend to some business.  When I returned, I was angry and shut the door hard and locked it.  I walked four feet from the door to the computer terminal to run a report.  Five minutes later, I heard a noise on my right, turned and watched the door opening.

I walked over to the door, saw it was still locked, checked to see if there was any wind, but it was quiet and still outside.  I asked Barb if she saw what had just happened and her reply was, "Yes, but the door is locked.  How did they do that?"

If I have learned anything while working here, it is that our civil war spirit soldiers are capable of all kinds of incredible feats.  Well, if they wanted to make me laugh to dispel my anger, it worked!

Smell of Death

Thursday, January 15, 2009, 2:45 a.m.

This was relayed to me by my co-worker and fellow night auditor, Courtney.

Courtney stepped out the side, private lobby entrance to get a breath of fresh air and was immediately assaulted by a foul odor.  As we both have experienced this gruesome smell and compared notes, we both describe it as something that has died and has been out too long.

Courtney said that it only lasted approximately 30 seconds and then completed dissipated.

This is a phenomenon that I have experienced many times at the hotel and on the main battlefield itself.

Our Confederate In the Attic

Tuesday, January 13, 2009, 7:40 a.m.

I was standing in the lobby in anticipation of any guests that might want to check out.  I heard several footsteps in the attic directly above my head in the lobby area.  They started from the middle of the ceiling and stopped after a few steps.

I immediately checked to make sure one of the maintenance men was not up in the attic getting supplies.  No one was there.

If you are wondering why I surmise this is a Confederate soldier that walks around our attic, the reason is because over the years we have had several people with psychic abilities walk into our lobby.  One of the first things they tell us is that we have a Confederate soldier from Mississippi "hanging around" in our attic.

On the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg, the 2nd and 42nd Mississippi, along with the 55th North Carolina infantry regiments, were positioned in the railroad cut and heavily engaged in action against the 6th Wisconsin infantry regiment.  The 6th Wisconsin prevailed in battle, taking the position, at a great loss in lives on both sides.

Two of our suites and one wing sit within feet of this desperate fight.  Our main office is also a short distance away from the scene of this carnage.  The railroad cut runs the entire length of our hotel property.

Over the years, I have used my digital recorder to speak with our Confederate in the attic.  He is a very talkative fellow!

Civil War Soldier Ghost Appears In the Lobby!

Monday, January 12, 2009, 3:35 a.m.

I was coming back from the breakfast room with another cup of coffee when movement by the front door caught my eye.  I immediately looked over to the door and saw a figure just inside the lobby to the right of the door.

The figure was solid and only appeared for approximately two to three seconds, but it was startling.  It was a Union soldier.

The blue of his uniform and gold of his buttons were easily and clearly seen.  However, he appeared to me minus his head and legs, with just his torso and arms.  This is not the first time I have seen one of the civil war soldier spirits, but it is certainly the first time I have seen one in that partial form.

Needless to say, I did not need any more coffee for the rest of the night to stay awake!

Thinking about the way he showed himself to me makes me think that he was trying to tell me that he was killed by the artillery fire that was aimed at Lieut. James Stewart's Battery B, 4th U.S. Artillery.  Three of those artillery pieces were positioned in the exact location where the west wing of our hotel sits today.  These guns were heavily engaged on the afternoon of the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg and almost captured by the Confederate troops.

This was the first time this Union soldier appeared to me.  However, it would not be the last time.

Light Rods Outside In Middle of the Night

Sunday, January 11, 2009, 2:43 a.m.

I was approaching the lobby with my coffee on my way back to the manager's office and once again witnessed flashing lights - like lightening rods - at various heights just above the ground and spaced apart, outside the front of the building.  This time they appeared near the middle wing in the upper section of the hotel.

Once again, there were no cars or trucks on the adjacent road.  Once again, I checked the security lights and nothing was amiss.  Once again, I reported the incident in the morning to maintenance.  Maintenance reported back to me, once again, that there were no glitches with the security lights.

Each time I see these lightening rod objects flash, however, they are never even close to the 20-foot security lights.

Ghosts Moving Objects Again

Saturday, January 10, 2009, 9:12 p.m.

I was sitting at the manager's desk watching t.v. when I heard a crinkling sound directly behind me.  I turned the chair in the direction of the sound and looked down.  I saw a WalMart shopping bag which contained four cans of furniture polish.  All four cans of polish were standing in the upright position.  I watched in amazement as, one-by-one, each can was knocked over on its side and then slipped out of the bag.

Could our little ghost boy, Timmy, be curious again?  Or, was it one of the civil war soldier ghosts trying to get my attention?

Guest Inquires If Hotel Is Haunted

Monday, January 5, 2009, 7:30 a.m.

This was related to me by my co-worker and fellow night auditor, Courtney.

Two guests came to the front desk and asked Courtney if there was anything strange going on at the hotel.  Courtney asked them what they meant by strange.  They wanted to know if the hotel was haunted.

The two guests reported that late on the previous evening, they were in bed watching t.v. when the drapes started to move violently, as if someone was trying to pull them open.  They investigated and there was no draft of any kind to make the drapes move at all.

They also reported waking up all night long and seeing "bright balls of light flying around the room."

Of course, I had to know which room this incident occurred in.  It happened in a room in a wing of the hotel where guests have reported other stories of strange occurrences, so I was not surprised.

However, this was the first time any of us have heard about "bright balls of light flying around the room."

On a side note, they checked out that morning and came back that evening to stay with us another night.

Lobby Door Opened By Unseen Hands

Saturday, January 3, 2009, 4:35 p.m.

Barb, Carrie and I were standing in the lobby area behind the front counter and watched the front door to the lobby open.  No one came in.

If you've read older entries, you know that the door to the lobby is very heavy and I have often seen guests struggle to open it.

Our Ghosts Celebrate New Year's With A Bang!

Wednesday, December 31, 2008, 5:09 p.m.

My mom always comes to work with me on New Years Eve.  She is such a trooper to sit with me during my all night, 16-hour shift.

Just after 5:00 p.m., Carrie, my mom and I were in the lobby area standing behind the counter chatting when the front door opened.  As soon as the front door opened, the inside ceiling light directly in front of the door immediately blew out with a flash and a bang.

No one was standing in the doorway or had come in the door.  The front, lobby door is heavy with a bar across the top that forces the door to shut as soon as it is opened.  Needless to say, Carrie was her usual excited self:  "They did NOT do that!"  My mom and I just laughed.

11:49 p.m. - My mom and I were in the manager's office chatting.  I was gathering everything I needed to complete the midnight audit.  We both heard a creaking noise coming from the direction of the middle breakfast prep room, which is located between the manager's office and the laundry room.

Since I have heard this creaking sound many times coming from this room, I grabbed my mom and took her into the room.  "See mom, this is what happens with the attic door.  Sometimes you hear it opening and sometimes you don't."

The attic door was wide open.

Thursday, January 1, 2009, 1:00 a.m. and 2:25 a.m.

My mom was still sitting at the manager's desk reading her book, while I was in my usual spot, which is a lounge chair across the room.  A movement caught my mom's eye and she watched the attic door opening on its own.

My mom has been with me many times on the battlefield and has experienced many unexplainable things with me there.  Her reaction to the above was "Happy New Year's Boys."

Thursday, January 1, 2:40 a.m. and 3:04 a.m.

Each of the above-listed times, my mom and I heard a loud thud coming from the front of the building.  It sounded like something large hit the outside of the building.  Each time, I immediately went to the front lobby door and stepped outside.  Each time, there was nothing on the ground and no damage to the front of the building.  More phantom artillery fire or small arms fire?  Another common occurrence.

Things That Go BANG In The Night

Sunday, December 28, 2008, 3:40 a.m.

I was sitting in the office reading when I heard a loud bang on the floor and felt a hard vibration/thump directly under my feet (coming from the basement).  There is NO way I am going down into that creepy basement at this hour unless there is a fire.

I did report the incident to maintenance when he arrived in the early morning.  He checked the area directly below where I was sitting, and there was nothing that would have caused anything to hit the ceiling in the basement.  (I know what I heard and what I felt through my feet on the floor.)  Hmmm.

Phantom Hands Move Object

Wednesday, December 24, 2008, 6:45 a.m.

The following was relayed to me by Courtney, my co-worker and fellow night auditor:

At the time of writing this diary entry, the hotel was getting ready for a new reservation system.  The computers and other necessary equipment related to this were in boxes approximately four feet by four feet and were stacked neatly upon each other.  They were placed next to a wall in the manager's office.

When Courtney had arrived that afternoon, she had placed her purse on top of the stack of boxes.  She positioned it in an upright position leaning against the wall.  Almost three hours later, Courtney was sitting at the manager's desk working on a crossword puzzle when she heard a noise coming from her left (the direction of the boxes).

Courtney looked over just in time to see her purse being "pushed" across the top of the four foot box to the edge and onto the floor.  She stated that it never tipped over during the entire movement but, actually, stayed in the upright position as it was moved.  Courtney told me that she said out loud:  "Hello!  I guess you didn't like my purse there."  She then placed her purse upright on the floor.

Just to prove that the box was level and not tilted in anyway, Courtney put some lightweight newspapers on top of the same stack of boxes.  The papers remained in the same place all night long.
